Engaging all Students in Maths and Numeracy

Secondary Years 7 - 10 & VCAL Focus
Description:

In order to engage most students successfully in maths and numeracy classes in the middle years and in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), mathematics teaching needs to move beyond the textbook, worksheets and “chalk and talk” to offer an alternative approach and a chance for ALL students to succeed and enjoy mathematics learning.
The hands-on activities in this workshop will focus on the development and practice of core maths skills through a wide range of approaches such as games, whole group and co-operative small group work, as well as on enjoyment and having fun with maths. Many of the approaches also support and encourage the use and understanding of mathematical language which is an important, underpinning skill that needs to be addressed in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Activities will also demonstrate that maths can be made relevant and more engaging through the use of real-life materials and contexts.
Suitable for anyone teaching mathematics or numeracy in the middle years, disengaged Year 10 students and VCAL, and who is on the lookout for some new ideas or alternative approaches.
